Why Social Media Works

15 September 2015 by Vicky

I was walking home from dropping the children at school one morning last week when I saw my builder’s van drive past. This made me think about the fact that I have been vaguely thinking for ages that I should get in touch with him.

In the 15 minutes between then and getting home, I had come up with a whole list of things we needed doing; the dodgy chimney breast to be sorted before next winter’s high winds, a quote for rendering the house I had been wondering about, would he replace fascia boards and could I book him in to sand our floor next time we are away?

Quite a list, and one that will bring him in some good money, and yet he had not done anything to sell to me, no sales call, no special offer. Had I not been reminded that morning, by seeing his van drive past, the list I gave him would have remained jobs still to be done in my head.

To me, this sums up the benefits of social media to a small business. Many businesses do not have a van that drives around their target area, they are home based, or certainly a fixed location. They may meet people at networking, but that is for a few hours a month and adverts cost money, and are clearly selling something.

Social media is a Godsend for these businesses, where they can give out tips, things they know because they are brilliant at what they do, and they can interact with people. Sharing a comment or two with someone you meet once a month at networking, via Twitter or Facebook, will keep you in their mind, whether it is a task or product they need from you, or they hear a friend or acquaintance talking about something they think you could help with.

How to Promote your Business for Free.

30 April 2015 by Vicky

Did you know there are numerous ways to promote your business for free?

Through the internet and via social media there are so many different ways potential new customers can find you and all you need to do is make it as easy for them as possible. Here are a few ideas you might like to try:

Free Listings

Free listings on sites such as Google Plus, Google Places, Yell and Free Index often mean your business will appear on the first page of Google search results. If your listings are set up correctly they will include links to your website, your company logo and a short description of your business. Some even allow happy customers to place a review. If you’ve only time to do one – go with Google.

Specialist Listing Sites

Do you run regular events? Are your products or services targeted at certain groups? If so there are many sites which you can list your business or an event you are running, for free. Netmums is a brilliant one for people targeting parents, Treatwell (formerly Wahanda) is great if you have a beauty salon. Spend a short while searching for events or offers similar to your own and all the sites available will pop up in the search listings.

Use Video to Boost your SEO

30 March 2015 by Vicky

Posting…Tweeting…Blogging…I think we have all got to grips with the concept of the written word and its importance in growing our social media base and thus promoting our business. Well, don’t get too comfortable – it’s all change and it’s time to get vocal and start adding video to your content. facebook services

Research by Pew Internet shows that more people are watching videos online – and what’s more it’s across all demographics.  So it doesn’t matter what age your client base is – they are likely to watch and engage in videos. Indeed, research shows 41% of adults will like and share a video online.

In the world of video – short is good. Followers are often viewing videos on their mobile devices while on the go, so they want something that can easily fit in with their time constraints and attention spans. For platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn, around two minutes is enough, while Instagram will only allow a 15 second clip.

In 2013 video consumed 66% of all internet traffic, in 2018 it is predicted to reach 79%. It is shown that people are 64% more likely to buy into a service or product after watching a video on it and through ‘watch & share’ it’s likely your video will boost your SEO. Google loves a video – and indeed owns YouTube.

So what should you be talking about in a video? Well in short it could be anything – start with introducing yourself (people buy from people after all), talk about a service you offer, demonstrate a product or just give a few helpful tips that are relevant to your business. Videos can be loaded to your website as ‘Vlog’ (Video blog) posts or shared on Facebook, on LinkedIn and via Twitter.

Go online and check out what your competitors – big and small – are up to. Find similar, if not competing, companies and see what they do that appeals to you, then give it a go yourself.
There are lots of ways of creating videos without having to go to the expense of a professional shoot. People aren’t demanding Oscar worthy production values. You could record it on your mobile device and upload straight from there. There are lots of video editing apps out there: Flipagram is an Apple product but similar Android versions are available and they are very easy to use.

You never know, you might even find yourself enjoying it so much you get hooked on producing them!
As ever, we’re here for you should you want to learn more and join in.
