From Corporate Careers to Thriving Businesses
Celebrating 10 Years of Ally and Abbie's Virtual Assistant Franchise Journey
Starting a business is a big decision. Choosing to renew your commitment ten years later says even more.
That's exactly what two of our franchisees, Abbie Akinfenwa and Ally Phillips have done as they celebrate a decade with Pink Spaghetti and look ahead to the next chapter of their businesses.
For anyone wondering whether becoming a Virtual Assistant, running their own business or joining a franchise is the right move, their stories offer a brilliant insight into what's possible when you combine ambition with the right support.
What is a Virtual Assistant franchise?
If you've never come across a Virtual Assistant franchise before, you're not alone.
A Virtual Assistant (VA) provides professional business support to busy business owners, helping them with everything from inbox and diary management to customer service, administration, CRM management, events, bookkeeping support, document creation and much more.
As more businesses choose to outsource rather than employ, demand for skilled Virtual Assistants continues to grow across the UK.
While many people choose to start a VA business completely on their own, joining a franchise means you're building your business with the support of an experienced team behind you.
At Pink Spaghetti, our franchisees receive comprehensive training, proven business systems, marketing support, ongoing mentoring and access to a nationwide network of business owners who genuinely want each other to succeed.
For many people, that's the difference between starting a business alone and building one with confidence.
Different careers, one shared ambition
One of the biggest myths about becoming a Virtual Assistant is that you need to have worked as one before.
The reality couldn't be more different.
Many of our franchisees come from successful careers in completely different industries, bringing with them valuable transferable skills that become the foundation of their businesses.
Before joining Pink Spaghetti, Abbie held a senior IT role in London, travelling extensively overseas as part of her career. As her youngest daughter prepared to leave for university, she felt it was time for life to take a different direction. She had already started thinking about running a Virtual Assistant business herself and began researching who was already doing it well.
That's when she discovered Pink Spaghetti.
"I thought Pink Spaghetti seemed approachable and was priced at the right level."
For Ally, the motivation was slightly different. After a successful career as a Vice President at a bank, working in marketing and project management roles, she took a career break to raise her family. When she was ready to return to work, she wanted something that gave her the flexibility to be there for her family while still allowing her to use the commercial skills and experience she'd developed throughout her career.
Although their journeys were different, they both wanted the same thing: the opportunity to build successful businesses that worked around their lives rather than the other way around.
Their stories show that you don't need a specific background to become a successful Virtual Assistant. Whether your experience is in marketing, IT, finance, HR, events, operations, customer service or project management, the skills you've built over your career are often exactly what small businesses are looking for.
The support that makes all the difference
Running your own business can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also feel daunting.
That's why support sits at the heart of everything we do.
Abbie says:
"The support provided by the franchise is awesome and gives you the confidence to take on more work. Lots of ups and downs, met loads of people who are now friends and help support as well. Ally is my work-wife, and I have lost track of the number of times I ring her up, just because... I am looking forward to the next chapter with Pink Spaghetti."
Her experience reflects something we hear time and again from franchisees. Having experienced people around you who understand the challenges of running a business gives you confidence to grow, take opportunities and keep moving forward.
More than a franchise, a lifelong friendship
One of our favourite parts of Ally and Abbie's story is that they met during their Pink Spaghetti training ten years ago.
Neither of them knew then that they were meeting someone who would become one of their closest friends. Today they affectionately refer to each other as their "work wife", regularly picking up the phone to share ideas, celebrate successes, solve challenges or simply have a chat. It's a wonderful reminder that although you're running your own business, you're never running it on your own. The friendships, encouragement and willingness to help each other are what make our network so special.
Building businesses that fit around life
For Ally, flexibility has always been at the heart of why she chose Pink Spaghetti.
She wanted to build a career that allowed her to be present for her family while doing work that genuinely made a difference.
Ten years later, that's exactly what she's achieved.
As Ally explains:
"My main reason for becoming a franchisee was about flexibility to be there for my family, and running my business over the last 10 years has enabled me to do that. It's also been so rewarding because I've enabled people in my team to work flexibly, our clients to get time back because of the support we provide them, and I've been involved with loads of charities where we've been able to support making a difference to lots of people's lives. Such a rewarding experience.
Along the way I've met incredible people, and it's been so special to have such brilliant support from The Support Team, the network and so many other people I've met over the years. I did my training with Abbie, and we've been there for each other every step of the way, which has been fantastic."
Her story perfectly captures what so many people are looking for today.
Not just a business that provides an income, but one that offers flexibility, purpose, personal fulfilment and the opportunity to create positive change for others.
Why renew after 10 years?
People often ask why someone would renew a franchise after ten years. The answer is surprisingly simple:
Because they're still growing.
Because they still see value.
Because they still have ambitious plans for the future.
Over the last decade, Ally and Abbie have built thriving businesses, supported hundreds of clients, embraced new technology, navigated changing markets and continued developing with the backing of our head office team and nationwide franchise network.
Renewing their franchise agreements wasn't simply a contractual decision. It was a decision to continue building businesses they love, with people they trust.

They came from different careers, had different motivations and couldn't have known that they would not only build thriving businesses, but also a lifelong friendship.
Ten years later, they've both chosen to renew their franchises, a decision that says more about the value of support, community and opportunity than any marketing message ever could.
