From Corporate Recruitment Manager to Business Owner

Why Niki Chose Pink Spaghetti

Returning to work after maternity leave can be a challenging experience. For many professionals, it offers an opportunity to reflect on what they really want from their career, their family life and their future. For Pink Spaghetti franchisee Niki Pinner, that reflection led to a life-changing decision. Today, Niki runs her own successful Virtual Assistant business supporting small business owners across Wyre Forest, Stourbridge and the wider West Midlands. But just a year ago, she was facing a situation that many professionals will recognise.

When Your Career No Longer Fits Your Life
After returning from her second maternity leave, Niki found herself navigating a role that looked very different from the one she had left. There was a new team, new systems and new processes to learn, all while balancing the demands of family life with two young children at home. Like many parents returning to work, she was trying to manage everything at once.

"I was sitting at my desk late in the evening feeling tired, anxious and quietly wondering how much longer I could keep going at that pace."

The reality was that something needed to change. While many people in that position begin looking for another employed role, Niki realised that wasn't what she wanted. She wanted more control over her future, more flexibility and the opportunity to build something that belonged to her.

Why a Franchise Made Sense
Starting a business from scratch can feel overwhelming, especially when you have financial commitments and a young family. For Niki, the attraction of a franchise was the ability to become her own boss without having to figure everything out alone. She was drawn to the variety that comes with running a Virtual Assistant business, using a wide range of skills and supporting different clients rather than being confined to a single role or industry. Importantly, she could build a business around her life, rather than trying to fit her life around a job.

Before making any decisions, Niki did what many successful Pink Spaghetti franchisees do. She carried out thorough research, attended webinars, spoke to existing franchisees and worked through multiple cashflow forecasts to ensure she was making an informed decision. By the time she joined Pink Spaghetti, she knew exactly why she was making the move.

Backing Herself and Taking the Leap
One of the most striking parts of Niki's story is that she handed in her notice before officially signing her franchise agreement. With two children under five, a larger mortgage following a home extension and plenty of family responsibilities, it wasn't a decision she took lightly. It was the result of careful planning and a strong belief that she wanted something different from her career. That determination is something we see regularly across the Pink Spaghetti network

Many of our franchisees come from corporate careers, management roles, recruitment, HR, banking, project management, events, property and countless other industries. They may not have run a Virtual Assistant business before, but they bring valuable transferable skills, commercial awareness and a genuine desire to help businesses succeed.

Building New Skills Along the Way
During the period between leaving employment and launching her business, Niki invested heavily in her own development. Already interested in Artificial Intelligence, she took the opportunity to complete training and deepen her understanding of how AI can be used effectively within businesses. Today, she incorporates that knowledge into her client support, helping business owners understand practical ways to save time, improve efficiency and make better use of emerging technology. It's a great example of something we encourage throughout the Pink Spaghetti network. Learning doesn't stop after initial training.

As a franchisee, you're supported to continually develop your skills, explore new opportunities and adapt your services to meet the changing needs of clients.

Launching with Confidence
Niki launched her Pink Spaghetti business in May 2026. Although still in the early stages of her journey, she already feels confident she made the right decision.

"The support from the Pink Spaghetti network has been incredible, the training has been thorough and genuinely useful, and for the first time in a long time I'm starting each week feeling fired up and energised rather than running on empty."

That support network is one of the reasons so many people choose the franchise route over going it alone. When you join Pink Spaghetti, you're not starting from scratch. You're joining an established national brand with proven systems, comprehensive training, ongoing mentoring and a community of franchisees who genuinely want to see each other succeed.

You Don't Need Virtual Assistant Experience
One of the biggest misconceptions about becoming a Pink Spaghetti franchisee is that you need previous Virtual Assistant experience. In reality, many of our most successful franchisees come from completely different professional backgrounds.

Before launching her business, Niki spent 16 years working in recruitment, leadership and project management, most recently as Recruitment Manager at PwC. Those skills didn't disappear when she changed careers. In fact, they became some of her greatest strengths as a business owner. The ability to organise, communicate, manage projects, solve problems, build relationships and support clients are all highly transferable skills that form the foundation of a successful Pink Spaghetti business. That's why our recruitment process focuses so heavily on mindset, attitude and transferable experience rather than specific industry knowledge. We can teach the systems, processes and service delivery. What matters most is having the right mindset and a genuine desire to help clients.

Could You Be Feeling the Same Way?
Niki's story will feel familiar to many professionals. Perhaps you've returned to work after a career break and things no longer feel right. Maybe you're tired of working towards someone else's targets. Perhaps you're looking for more flexibility, more control over your future or the opportunity to build something for yourself. If that's you, you're not alone. Many of our franchisees joined Pink Spaghetti after reaching a similar crossroads in their careers. The good news is that you don't have to figure it all out on your own. With comprehensive training, ongoing support, proven systems and an established brand behind you, becoming a Pink Spaghetti franchisee could provide the opportunity you're looking for.
