Declutter Your Digital Life

Top Tips from Pink Spaghetti Co-Founder Caroline Gowing

In a world where our work and lives are increasingly digital, it's easy for inboxes, desktops and devices to become just as cluttered as a physical workspace. Whether you’re a business owner, or simply someone trying to stay organised, digital overload can quietly impact your productivity and wellbeing.

Our Co-Founder, Caroline Gowing, knows first-hand how important a clean and functional digital space is, especially when you're managing multiple clients and spinning several plates at once. Here, she shares her top 10 practical tips for giving your digital world a much-needed refresh.

1. Tidy Your Desktop
A messy desktop can feel overwhelming before your day even begins. Caroline recommends starting with a clear-out. Delete old files, sort useful ones into clearly labelled folders, and remove shortcuts you no longer use. It’s a small change that can make a big difference.

2. Unsubscribe from Emails You Don’t Need
Take a moment to unsubscribe from newsletters or promotional emails that no longer serve you. Reducing email noise means your inbox becomes a more focused, manageable space.

3. Organise Your Files
If you're constantly searching for documents, it might be time for a folder system overhaul. Group files logically, by client, project or date, and regularly delete those you no longer need.

4. Streamline Your Apps
Take stock of the apps on your phone or computer. If you haven’t used something in months, uninstall it. Fewer apps mean fewer distractions and more mental clarity.

5. Back Up Important Data
Losing files is frustrating and avoidable. Make a habit of backing up key documents to a cloud service or external hard drive. You’ll save time and stress in the long run.

6. Review Your Digital Habits
It’s easy to fall into the trap of checking emails or social media on autopilot. Set boundaries - Caroline suggests checking emails at specific times rather than reacting in real time.

7. Refresh Your Passwords
Your online security is part of your digital hygiene. Update old passwords and consider using a password manager to store them securely.

8. Declutter Your Contacts
Whether it’s your phone or email contact list, take time to clear out duplicates or old connections. It’ll make reaching the right people quicker and easier.

9. Turn Off Non-Essential Notifications
Endless pings and pop-ups kill focus. Caroline recommends turning off all but the most necessary notifications - your brain (and your battery!) will thank you.

10. Make It a Monthly Habit
Like any form of decluttering, it works best when done regularly. Add a 30-minute ‘digital tidy’ to your calendar each month to stay on top of things.

Final Thoughts from Caroline:
“When your digital world is organised, your mind feels clearer too. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just make a start, and you’ll feel the benefits almost immediately.”
